A guard of honour formed by Burnley Sea Cadets lined the quayside at Finsley Gate as the commodore, Mr D. Taylor, and Mr Robb prepare to board the Capri.
More than 100 people braved the cold on Sunday, 4th April 1971, to take part in the traditional "Blessing of the Boats" ceremony, performed this year, by the Rev. F. E. Robb, president of the Free Church Council, at Finsley Gate Marina. Bunting was flown on the quayside, and a guard of honour was formed by members of Burnley Sea Cadet Corps under Lt J. Thornber. Later, a mini-fleet of boats sailed up the canal along "the straight mile" to Thompson Park - the first sail of the season.
The ceremony, thought to be the only one of its kind in the country held inland, was organised by members of the East Lancashire and West Yorkshire Boat Club and it attracted many members of other boat clubs, including Bingley. The blessing was the first performed by Mr Robb, and the service included hymns and prayers. The lesson was read by Cdre David Taylor, of Rawtenstall, whose father, Mr Jack Taylor, is secretary of the local club. After the sail, a social was held at Fulledge Conservative Club, Plumbe Street, Burnley. Mr Jack Taylor commented: "We have certainly had more support this year because on the last occasion it was snowing. New members have also improved the turn-out as well."
