Footballer Arthur Bellamy sets off the walkers on their route.
Despite sore feet and blisters, only 23 out of 100 people failed to complete the 21-mile route of the Worsthorne Youth Club's sponsored walk on Easter Monday, 12th April 1971. The walk, the first since the club opened 12 weeks ago, was so popular with youngsters that they have asked the club leader, Mr Michael Kelly, for a repeat. Plans could be made soon for an even bigger event, possibly a relay to Blackpool. People taking part in the Easter Monday walk were club members and their friends, and a party from Burnley Boys' Club. The walk was to raise money for club funds.
The route was from Worsthorne to Cliviger, Hardcastle Crags and back to Worsthorne via Widdop. The walkers were started off on their route by Burnley footballer Arthur Bellamy. Mr Kelly organised the walk and acted as marshal. His wife, Jennifer, was one of the walkers, and she got as far as the Pack Horse Inn, Widdop. She had completed about 13 miles, and later helped with a potato pie meal for the weary walkers. Mr Kelly said: "This was a successful event, and was so popular that all the youngsters were asking for a repeat. We might even consider a relay event to Blackpool. After the walk, ladies from the Mothers' Union gave a potato pie meal and then there was a dance at night to round things off nicely."
