Sun Brings Out Crowds

One of the popular displays at the Towneley craft museum was that showing the cooper's craft. Here Mr J. Lord shows Mr and Mrs B. Tattersall and their son, Graham, who live in Inglehurst Road, Burnley, an example of cooper's work.

One of the sunniest Easter periods for years meant bumper crowds flocking to the local countryside as Burnley people got out and about to enjoy the first signs of summer. By car they headed for beauty spots in the area and Blackpool and the Lake District, whole on foot hundreds of hikers took to Pendle Hill and the Pendleside villages for the traditional Good Friday ramble.

Towneley Hall had its busiest Easter in history, with over 12,000 people visiting the museum and art gallery, and 4,000 having their first look at the new craft museum beside the hall. Sunday, the sunniest day of the holiday, saw 5,100 people passing through the hall, the most ever in one day, according to curator Mr Hector Thornton. By far the warmest and sunniest day of the holiday was Sunday, when the sun shone for 7-4 hours and the temperature reached 59degs Fahrenheit.
