Boots, gym shoes, brogues, you name the footwear and nearly 100 youngsters who took part in a 15-mile sponsored walk on Sunday morning, 18th April 1971, were probably wearing them. But whether their boots were made for walking or not, they all set off with bubbling enthusiasm from the Sea Cadets headquarters near Finsley Gate. The event was staged by the local branch of the National Lifeboat Institute as part of their contribution to a national campaign for funds.
Youngsters from the various local youth organisations had come forward to support the event, obtaining their own sponsors - prepared to pay hard cash for every mile they walked. The teenagers all over 15 years, were well cared for on their 15-mile journey, or as much as they could cover of it, at various check points along the route. Refreshments and a rescue service were provided. Members of the local St John Ambulance Brigade were on hand to render first aid, if necessary, at the checking stations. The 15-mile course went via the Long Causeway to the turning for Shore, down to Portsmouth, through Cliviger, Towneley Holmes, and back to the starting point at Finsley Gate.
