The winners of the town’s best kept garden competition were announced, an event run by the Burnley Horticultural Society with a bit of help from Burnley Borough Council. This year retired Burnley Express chargehand Mr. John Barker has “done the double” with his magnificent garden at 9 Chingford Bank. He wins both the W.F. Haffner Trophy for the best kept garden in the Burnley District and the Summer Trophy for the best kept council house garden.

John was thrilled that he had finally managed to beat his arch rival Mr. Allan Jackson of 34 Brunshaw Avenue into second place, last year there was only half a point in it and the positions were reversed.
