The banner at Turf Moor mourns the impending drop of Burnley FC from the First Division after 24 years. But the faces show some of the fans can still raise a smile.
From a match report by Keith McNee:
Even the April weather turned sour on Burnley at the finish of a grim season. Conditions for Saturday's, 24th April 1971, match which gloomily brought down the Turf Moor First Division curtain became increasingly difficult after rain, and with so much water and mud on the surface it was no surprise that the quality of the football from both sides suffered.
Burnley were very fortunate to take the lead in the 29th minute with a shot by Casper after a free kick had twice been re-taken by Bellamy. Burnley might have had a second goal just before the interval when Coates powered his way through the inside-left position but Wilson couldn't get to the ball before the advancing keeper.
Burnley might have increased their lead in the second-half when Coates took the ball round Robson before laying it across goal to give Collins a volleying chance. The winger struck the cross well as he ran in through the mud but his shot hit Todd with Boulton probably beaten. But it was only justice when Derby grabbed an equaliser through Durban who headed in from a free-kick by Hinton. The winner, and a merited one, stemmed from a free-kick taken by Mackay and only partially cleared. McGovern fastened on to the ball and beat Mellor from outside the penalty area.

In addition to the usual match report there were additional articles on the page: One by Walters speaking up for Burnley playing staff; another reporting that Adamson was backed by the players; and a report by Keith McNee with cameraman Ron Rennel who sought the opinions of Burnley fans at the match. Thirteen fans were pictured - 6 from Burnley, others from Blackburn, Brierfield, Colne (2), Milnthorpe, Salterforth, Grange-over-Sands, They were of varying opinions about who and what was to blame and how long it would take to get back in the First Division but most of them said they would continue to support Burnley and watch future matches.
