There was no respect for past records at Towneley Comprehensive School's annual sports day on Wednesday, 26th May 1971, when new times or distances were set in 12 events. Old records fell in eight track events and four field events during sports at Barden Playing Fields, and outstanding personal performances came from Karen Palmer and Stephen Hall. Karen, aged 12, won the first-year girls 200 metres in 28.2 seconds - faster than the girl winners over the same distance in the more senior years. Sixteen-year-old Stephen broke both the senior boys' 100 and 200 metre records, recording times of 11.4 and 23.4 seconds, respectively. He was also senior boys' champion.
