Club Record At Gannow Baths

After their successful record attempt under water, the jubilant sub-aqua team surfaced for the camera.

There was a breathtaking achievement at Gannow Baths on Wednesday, 26th May 1971, when 13 members of Burnley Sub-Aqua Swimming Club set up a new club record for staying under water. It was all part of a training session, in which a group of swimmers attempt to stay under water, with only one aqua lung for company. The object of the exercise is to practise passing round the aqua lung, holding your breath and getting used to underwater manoeuvres of this type.

During the session, each member managed to set up a new record of 90 seconds each. Explained social secretary Mr John Teague: "It is not as easy as you would think. When you have only one aqua lung you have to spit out a lot of water before you can start using it and it is quite a tricky operation." The record breaking 13 were: N. Parker (treasurer), H. Birtwistle, E. Bushby, S. Varley, R. Walton (training officer), S. Lee, V. Purcell, D. Neville, G. Wilkinson (diving officer), J. Savage (chairman), A. Berry (training officer), A. Williamson and J. Thornton. The club meets every Wednesday at Gannow Baths and Mr Teague added that anyone who wants to join the club will be welcome.
