Bad weather put paid to many of this year's attempts to break records at the Inter-School sports, held at St Hilda's on Thursday and Friday, 17th and 18th of June 1971. Only two records were broken in the boys' section, when Babij set up a new time for the 200 metres, and Haythornwhite, created a new record in the 1,500 metres. The girls were more successful and managed to break three records. Collinson broke the 3rd year high jump record, and Byrne the 3rd year 200 metres, and Rowan the 3rd year discus record.

Outstanding performances came in the boys' section from Babij, Aspden, Rushton, Annice, Durkin, Steele and Haythornwhite, all of whom won three places in the three events they entered. In the girls' section, Palmer, Ingram, Collinson, Byrne, Rowan and Sutcliffe all put up good performances.

The article gives a full list of results. Schools taking part in the event were Towneley Comprehensive, St Theodore's, Ivy Bank, Grammar School, High School, Barden, St Hilda's, Walshaw and Burnley Athletics Club.
