Goalkeeper Ken Mulhearn dives across goal in a desperate attempt to stop Willie Morgan scoring.
From a match report by Keith McNee:
Burnley manager Harry Potts and chief coach Jimmy Adamson were feeling infuriated after Saturday's match at Maine Road, not so much because the Clarets had lost another away fixture, but because they considered skipper-of-the-day Arthur Bellamy and his team mates had a rotten deal from the match officials. First, a Casper equaliser was disallowed despite the fact that he had two City defenders between him and the goal when he began to run for a Morgan cross; second, a penalty for hands against Merrington was a diabolical decision, the ball hitting his knee; third, the failure to take stringent action when the City forward was guilty of a wicked act of retaliation against Brian O'Neil.
City took the lead after only 45 seconds from a Burnley kick-off when Oakes stopped the Claret's progress and moved down the left for Summerbee to head in. Then in the sixth minute City scored a second goal when Waldron sent Lee sprawling with a tackle and Coleman then scored. Straight from the restart Casper headed in a goal from a Morgan pass but the linesman's flag was up and no score was awarded. Then about 90 seconds before the interval Young scored with a rocket shot that Thomson could hardly have seen.
In the second half Burnley made all the running and were the better team although City scored their fourth goal when Merrington, bringing an awkwardly bouncing ball away from the jaws of the goal, was judged by a linesman to have pushed the ball down with his hand and a penalty given. After this Burnley played their best football of the match and a fine piece of work by Morgan and an equally fine shot by Casper made it 4-1. In the 87th minute Coleman made his first mistake of the match in passing the ball back to the goalkeeper - Blant had time to intercept and turned the ball back to Morgan who fired into the corner of the net, a much deserved goal.
