John almost fulfils his ambition to become a pilot as he sits at the controls of the Super VC10.

Teenagers Linda Bardsley and David Langa had that flying high feeling this week thanks to Family Circle. They were the winners of the senior section of the Burnley Express recent painting contest and were whisked off on a jet trip from Blackpool to the Isle of Man on Tuesday 14th September 1971. It was the first time either of them had flown. During the afternoon their travel ranged from a 250mph turbojet flight to a 7mph horse-drawn tram.

The three winners of the intermediate section of the competition, Joanne Holdsworth, John Cunliffe and David Newby flew from Blackpool in a BOAC Super VC 10 to Manchester Airport. During the flight they were allowed to go into the cockpit and talk to the pilot, Capt. John Woodward.
