Peter Higgs reports : (summarised version) Burnley lost 2-0 at Shrewsbury to end a run of three successive victories. Like Burnley Shrewsbury are a team in danger of relegation but they did not play like it. It was a difficult match all round for Burnley, a frozen pitch, which got worse as the game progressed, made it hard to keep a foothold. The two teams produced a lively contest which Shrewsbury deserved to win. The first quarter of the match proved vital as last season’s Third Division Champions survived a bright opening by the Clarets and then snatched the lead. In only the third minute the pace of Phil Cavener brought a foul and from Martin Dobson’s free kick Billy Hamilton’s header was cleared off the line by Jake King. Shrewsbury then took charge of the game. The home team, who beat Manchester City on the same ground during their run to the FA Cup Quarter Finals last season, went ahead with a controversial goal in the 12th minute. Shrewsbury won a corner and although the linesman was flagging off-side for a Burnley free kick, the Ref allowed the corner to be taken, player-manager Graham Turner flicked it on and King dived between a group of Burnley players to head in. The Clarets then got a grip on midfield, with Martin Dobson dictating play, Marshall Burke, Kevin Young and Cavener all prominent in keeping Shrewsbury penned in their own half. However Shrewsbury centre halves Griffin and Keay were outstanding, and Burnley gave keeper Wardle an easy game. Shrewsbury got on top in the second half and increased their lead in the 62nd minute. A well worked move involving Atkins, King and Dungworth ended with Maguire beating Stevenson from 12 yards. Shrewsbury came close to increasing their lead,Scott, Burke, and Hamilton were all booked. Clarets finished strongly with Malcolm Smith, Hamilton and Burke all went close. Burnley were below their best and lacked punch in attack. Billy Rodaway was magnificent in defence, Dobson had a big influence but faded and Cavener had some lively moments. The Clarets boosted by their performances over the holiday period, need to return to their best form in the important matches ahead. Shrewsbury Town: (4-4-2) Wardle, King, Griffin, Keay, Larkin, Tong, Turner, Atkins, Biggins, Dungworth, Maguire. Sub: Chapman (not used). Burnley: (4-4-2) Stevenson, Scott, V.Overson, Rodaway, Brennan, Smith, Dobson, Burke, Young, Cavener, Hamilton, Sub.: Dixon (not used) Clarets Star Billy Rodaway…commanding display in defence.
