Brian Clark, scorer of both the Cardiff goals, was thwarted on this occasion by Burnley keeper Tony Walters.

Jimmy Scoular's Cardiff City men will still be kicking themselves this morning over the sloppy way they let an opening day point slide out of what at the interval looked a very firm grasp indeed. For brave Burnley, though, Division Two life is obviously going to give them a chance to demonstrate spirit and skill second-to-none. After a deserved draw against the odds the Clarets can look ahead with great confidence.

Martin Dobson and company looked well out of this Ninian Park match in the 36th minute when striker Brian Clark swooped for the second of his two extremely well-taken goals. The Welsh side fell back in the second half, however, and Burnley, with nothing to lose, threw everything into attack and grabbed a first goal in 66 minutes and a fully merited equaliser eight minutes from the end of a lively, action-packed encounter.

Burnley's first goal started from a Casper pass midfield to Thomas on the left touchline just inside the Cardiff half. Thomas beat two defenders before placing the ball in the jaws of goal and Casper had made so much ground that he was able to stab the ball into the roof of the net from no more than three feet. With eight minutes remaining Thomas was the instigator of the second goal. He took a free-kick, Fletcher headed on and Dobson shot through off the right-hand post, helped also by a deflection off a defender.
