From a Match Report by Keith McNee:
Burnley jumped into third place in Division Two with a great Lancashire derby win over Preston in a fantastic game of four goals, two penalties and six bookings at Deepdale before a 27,200 crowd last night, 30th August 1971. Burnley's second win in four games was due to two tremendous goals by Steve Kindon and Frank Casper in the space of four minutes, capped by a penalty from Colin Waldron. Preston hit back with a spirited rally in which Hugh McIlmoyle scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute.
The central figure of the opening phase was undoubtedly Manchester referee Ricky Nicholson who, between the ninth and 13th minutes, booked four players, two from each side, apparently putting into operation the new dictum that tackles from behind will not in any circumstances be tolerated. After the opening sensations the football was fast and exciting with McIlmoyle going close with a snap shot for North End and then Casper doing well to get in a shot after a run by West had taken the ball from one penalty area to the other. It came as no shock when Burnley took the lead a minute before the interval. The goal originated from some clever defensive play by teenager Cliff, who held off Ham to push the ball back to Mellor. The goalkeeper's clearance was moved by Waldron to Kindon who went through the inside left position like an express train and then drove a thunderball left footer past the hopelessly beaten Kelly.
Three minutes after the start of the second half Casper, grabbed the second goal with a terrific right foot drive from 20 yards, hooked in after West had lifted the ball in to the middle. After an hour's play the tidal wave of the Burnley attack resulted in a penalty, Bellamy being brought down by McNab. Waldron calmly placed the ball into the right hand corner, well wide of Kelly to make it 3-0.
