Cricket is fast becoming a players' game and village clubs are having to rely more and more on 200 clubs and other such activities, stated Mr Derek Birchall, chairman of Read Cricket Club, at the annual dinner dance on Saturday, 6th November 1971. Paying tribute to all those who contribute to the running of the club, Mr Birchall said that many activities have to be held if a village club like Read is to function well.
Held at the Higher Trapp, Simonstone, the event was attended by about 150 people and Mr BIrchall presented the awards. The Crears Cup for first team batting was won by Richard Goodway for the second successive year, and the first team bowling award, the Collins Cup, was won by David Pollard. Two new trophies were presented to the second team, Frank Skinner winning the Crossly Cup for batting, and the Barrett Cup, for bowling went to Frank Newby. The captain's fielding award went to Neil Snape.
