From a report by Peter Higgs:
The match had almost everything. But it differed from the Boxing Day clash with Liverpool in two ways. There was more goalmouth incidents as both teams attacked with enthusiasm and skill. But there wasn't quite the same drama as the Turf Moor clash with Liverpool. On the balance of possession and the number of chances created, Burnley should have won. They came close on many occasions but always the winner eluded them. Burnley adapted much quicker to the tricky conditions. A severe frost had left a hard strip down the middle although the wings were soft and far less treacherous. During the opening period Burnley paralysed the home team and in the 18th minute Collins swung a corner to the far post, Dobson headed the ball back into the goalmouth and Nulty was there to stick his head forward and score from a couple of yards. Burnley piled on more pressure and three times within the space of a minute they had goalbound efforts cleared off the line. Then Coventry, who had not put together one dangerous move, scored in the 25th minute. The goal lifted Coventry and the action switched to Burnley's goalmouth.
The second half was more even with Burnley holding the upper-hand. It was in the finishing department that Burnley's only fault lay. With 25 minutes left Burnley produced the highlight of the match and were desperately unlucky not to score. Newton sent a long clearance upfield and Fletcher, who gave Craven a difficult time all afternoon, sprinted on to the ball, controlled it as it dropped, and then ran on to hit a searing drive from 20 yards which crashed against the crossbar and back into play.
