In days when all too often the guitar has become associated (at least by an older generation) with hippy-type discords, two local young men are well on the way to resurrecting the instrument to classical affections and respectability. They are Mr Kevin John Burke of Isles House Padiham and Mr Francis Pim of Beaufort Street Burnley, who have just set up the new Pavane Guitar Studio at Isles House. Both are exponents of the classical and fingerstyle guitar, both enjoy music-making and both are determined not only to build up a local school of the best guitar appreciation, but also to extend the scope of their studio tuition to other musical instruments by providing facilities for other music teachers.
Mr Burke was born in Cheshire, educated at schools in Burnley, North Wales and at Guest's College Blackburn. He has lived in London and abroad and at present works for a national soft drinks organisation. Mr Pim is a product of the local musically-aligned Barden School, with eight years studying the guitar in London, and currently works for a Lancashire dry cleaners. They have set themselves an initial target of 20 students and already have a number of inquiries from those interested in learning to play folk or classical guitar. Their idea is to run their school on the lines of those operating in London, either for class or individual tuition. This calls for a student to devote one hour a week to instruction at the studio and an hour each evening (usually at home) to practise.
