Belvedere teams: The B Team - A previously unpublished image.

From a report by Don Smith:
The bi-annual Lancashire Amateur League match between Belvedere A and B teams provided an entertainment without quarter asked or given. The club officials decided to rest the Holden Road number one pitch, and the match took place on the old first team sideways slope which could have made ball control more difficult. However, such was the enthusiasm and the will to chase which was demonstrated particularly well by some of the B team's talented youngsters. Consequently play was kept moving from midfield to wings and each defence had its gruelling moments of acute anxiety. The B team may have surprised the pundits by winning 2 - 1. Certainly they shocked their opponents who came off after the final whistle wearing expressions of disbelief.

John Lewis (his father is ex-claret Ronnie) scored the B team's first in the opening half. After the interval the play was mostly midfield with an occasional sortie via the wings. The A team attack had its lively moves, but usually they broke down against close marking and quick clearance. From one of these Lewis made it 2 - 0 from the penalty spot. The A team's Dave Proctor reduced the arrears but subsequent attempts to force a draw came to naught against a tight defence although several shots went near. The match was well refereed by Roy Butterfield.
