Jim Is Guest Of Honour

A champagne reward for Bill Oddie, who is presented with the bottle by Jimmy McIlroy, watched by Gerald Brown, Peter Roberts and chairman Jack Downey.

A record of over £600 profit was announced by Mr J. Downey, chairman of the Belvedere - Calder Vale Sports Club at Holden Road on Tuesday, 21st December 1971, for the annual Christmas competition. As a reward for making it such a success, Mr W. Oddie, the organiser was handed a bottle of champagne. Guest of honour was Jimmy McIlroy, former Burnley footballer and Northern Ireland international, who was introduced humorously by Mr Downey as a well known local cricketer who in summer was a guest player with Burnley GSOB CC.

Mr Downey said that a great deal of work had gone into the money raising scheme which was of immense importance to the financial side of the club and Mr Oddie and his helpers deserved every credit and the thanks of the members. Special awards were made to those who had brought in most money - T. F. Boyle in October; R. McKenna, November and G. Brown who topped the contributions with £90 in December. There were 66 prizes and the first, a coloured television set, went to Mrs Patel of Hollingreave Road.
