Thomas the Tank Engine, pursued by the Express reporter and photographer, was speeding around Burnley as volunteers collected money for the holiday home fund of the Children’s Leukaemia Fund. The volunteers have been collecting in many towns in the area and are trying to raise £250,000 needed to build two holiday homes to be used by the immediate families of children who are suffering from cancer. The Fund said it was hoped to build the holiday centres in the vicinity of Blackpool and Skegness. So far, they had raised £14,000 and local people gave generously as the engine, which was accompanied by music, wended its way through the town.
