Mr Smith (left) accepts a cheque for £293 from Mr Ken Duxbury for Scope.
A cheque for more than £290 was presented to Scope on Friday evening, 15th February 1974, at the Empire Bingo Club, St James's Street. The collection was started 18 months ago by the club committee for little Margaret Ann Girvan (8) of Ardwick Street, Burnley. Margaret suffers from a rare brain disease and it was hoped that enough would be collected to finance suitable medical treatment. Mr Ken Duxbury, manager of the bingo club said: "Margaret is now in Great Ormond Street Hospital so with the residue from the fund, we decided to donate it to a local charity. We said when we started collecting that we would do this if Margaret's treatment went through the National Health."
The cheque was presented by Mr Duxbury to Dr W. M. Turner and Mr A. Smith (treasurer). It is hoped to buy medical typewriters, finance holidays, and install a TV in the caravan in Fleetwood bought through the Mayor's fund for use by families with disabled children.
