The cast of “Broadway Babies” a team tribute to the world of musical theatre.
Hilda Basnett, The Burnley Express’s theatre critic writes : I found the one off presentation by Masque of their compilation of highlights from the musical completely satisfying. Performed at the Mechanics last Friday evening and entitled “Broadway Babies” as a tribute to the work of musical theatre, there was something to please all tastes. The 14 strong company added plenty of atmosphere to the excerpts they gave us and I particularly enjoyed the numbers from “Cats”. Kathleen and Nigel Wilkinson delighted us with numbers from “Showboat”, “Kiss me Kate”, and “Phantom of the Opera”. Comperes were Linda Bennett and Mick Dawson with John McCarthy sharing the accompaniment with Mick. Linda gave us an hilarious send up of a producer talking to her cast after a rehearsal of Hamlet, and Mick regaled us with excerpts from that very funny book, “The Art of Coarse Fishing”. The entire cast sang solo numbers and also provided chorus work. Besides those already mentioned there were Judith Briscall, Kathy Foster, Kelly Greenan, Philip Hindle, Granville Hoyle, Liz Lyons, David Pearson, George Pugh, Janie Pugh (who was production assistant with Mick), Abigail Wadsworth and Sheila Whitehouse. The Masque company is certainly here to stay, all they need is the right backing from the public.
