Another performance at the festival. A previously unpublished image.
The sound of music has been echoing from Burnley High School this week, with more than 100 local schoolchildren taking part in a music festival - the first of its kind in the town. This afternoon, Friday 22nd February 1974, the three-day festival ends on a high note with a brass band, bag-pipes, guitar music and a selection of songs. Children from all the secondary schools and all, except three, primary schools in the town have been taking part in the non-competitive festival. There are no prizes or marks. The aim of the festival is simply to provide musical entertainment.
It has been organised by the Burnley Schools' Music Association, and all schoolchildren were invited to enter. During the week more than 100 different items have been performed. These have included vocal and instrumental items, solos, choirs and orchestras. Mr Geoffrey Balson, the town's music organiser said: "The festival has been an experiment but it has gone so well it will certainly be repeated. Most schools have taken part because it is not competitive at all. It was just meant to be entertainment, and I've been surprised at the high standard of the music".
