From a report by Neil Preston:
A hat-trick from Stanley United centre forward Mick Heywood helped his side to give Burnley United their heaviest defeat of the season in the amateur Combination. The 7-0 scoreline at Bank Hall on Saturday 23rd February 1974, showed the gulf between the two teams. Stanley were keen, aggressive and imaginative, while United looked nothing like a top-of-the-table team.
The first half was even, with both teams having their sharpness. But for Oxley in the Stanley goal who made two brilliant saves, Burnley United could well have taken the lead. However, it was Stanley who made the most of their chances, leading by two goals at half time. At the beginning of the second half Stanley once again put the pressure on and right winger Steele often proved to be the danger man. The United midfield men fought hard to get back into the game but the inevitable third goal came, followed by a further four.
