From a match report by Peter Higgs:
A disputed penalty cost Burnley a point in a match that failed to live up to expectations at Loftus Road on Wednesday night, 27th February 1974. The goal, in the 65th minute, came when referee Mr Harold Davey ruled that Stan Bowles, a constant threat to the Burnley defence throughout the match, had been brought down by Geoff Nulty. Bowles took the kick and sent Stevenson the wrong way. After that Burnley fought determinedly to score but, as in recent matches, their touch was missing in front of goal. Nevertheless they deserved a point for their night's work. And they came very close to getting it in the last minute of the game when Colin Waldron hit a powerful volley towards the corner of the net. Parkes could only push out and Billy Ingham raced on to the rebound and shot from inside the six-yard box, but Parkes smothered the shot.
The match, between the two teams promoted from the Second Division at the end of last season, rarely produce the football that has earned both teams so much praise. It was only in the closing minutes of the first half that the game sprang to life when ex-Claret David Thomas hit a powerful low shot into the net from 15 yards. Burnley hit back immediately when Frank Casper scored on a rebound shot from Leighton James. During the second half the "needle" which had been apparent almost throughout, produced a few unpleasant moments. During the last 20 minutes Burnley had their best spell of attacking but could not produce an equaliser.
