From a match report by Keith McNee
It's no good trying to put the blame on Peter Mellor again for another miserable FA Cup failure. That Burnley defence in the second-half on Saturday, 15th January 1972, was just a shambles. Jimmy Adamson said "It is criminal that when we have four defenders who are each 6ft tall we still give Huddersfield three free headers from corners." The Clarets survived Corner No.1 - Big Frank Worthington headed it into the back of the net, but Referee Wallace awarded a free kick to Burnley instead of a goal to Huddersfield. They also survived Corner No.2 - given away all too easily after 76 minutes. But don't ask me how with all that chaos in the box. They did not survive Corner No.3 - Les Chapman swung it in from the left and right-back Clarke headed his first goal in two years. Where was the Burnley "defence"? That's what everybody wants to know!
Huddersfield threatened to run riot in the first half with a blustery wind behind them and in the second they frittered chances that should have been taken before eventually getting the goal we all suspected had to come sooner or later. Admittedly, Burnley had their moments but they never convinced that they could match the confidence, the composure and the harmony of Huddersfield. The key to it all was in midfield and once the stuffing had been knocked out of Thomas by four crunching tackles in the first 32 minutes Town were as good as home and dry. There was a change at the start of the second half, with the Clarets more in the match and they should have gone ahead in the 70th minute but Docherty hit the roof of the stand from no more than seven yards. The only other chances which came Burnley's way were a Kindon header which he put a foot too high and a shot by Thomas with five minutes to go which Lawson saved despite a painful leg injury.
