Former England star Bobby Charlton scored two fine goals and had another disallowed in a sparkling display at Holden Road on Sunday afternoon. But his team of international all-stars still went down to a 3-2 defeat against a combined Belvedere-Burnley GSOB team, whose goals were scored by Derek Davies, Andrew Perry and Gary Kirk.

More than 500 spectators turned up to watch a thoroughly entertaining match featuring some great names from the past. Charlton played in the front line alongside Ray Pointer and Roger Hunt, whose combined value, were they at their peak today, would run into a few millions. At halftime a penalty competition was held between the three match officials, referee Martin Edwards (the Manchester United chairman) and linesmen John Jackson, the Burnley chairman, and Brian Miller, the Burnley manager. Miller was forced to take his penalties - against former teammate Adam Blacklaw - from the edge of the penalty area. He came last scoring twice out of five attempts. After Edwards and Jackson had each scored three times, Edwards won the competition in a sudden-death play-off.
