Time Marches On Again In St James's Street

The unveiling. Alderman Parkinson has done the honours and uncovered the new town centre clock, which bears the name of the Rotary Club of Burnley.

Time Marches on, and to keep up with present trends and the ever-changing pattern of life there are new, equally up-to-date, ways of recording it. And there's a new landmark in Burnley town centre to prove we are keeping abreast of the times. It's the four-faced clock, which was unveiled on Tuesday, 25th January 1972, in St James's Street, where it has been erected on a central island. As the Mayor of Burnley, Ald Desmond Parkinson, carried out the unveiling, the crowd who had gathered cheered and applauded. And then - it was just after 11.20 a.m. - most bystanders checked off its accuracy by their own wrist-watches.

The clock was presented to the town by Mr Walter Taylor, on behalf of Burnley Rotary Club, to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Mr Taylor is immediate past-president of the club, which felt there was a shortage of clocks in the town, and that the presentation of a new one would be a gesture signifying the role of the club in Burnley - one of service to the community. It takes over from an old timepiece, now without fingers, on a building on the north side of the street, and it was bought with money made at a recent donkey derby organised by the club. It has the club's name and Rotary's motto "Service before self," on the faces, and four Rotary badges are beneath on the supporting pole.

The unveiling was watched by many prominent local people, and representatives from various organisations. The leader of Burnley Town Council (Ald T. E. Gallagher) and the Town Clerk (Mr C. V. Thornley, who is this year's Rotary president) were among those present. What do the public think of their new clock? Most people seemed impressed with the square design, and one regular town centre shopper obviously welcomed it. She said: "At least I'll be able to get on with my shopping, instead of having to keep asking people the time, it's a lovely clock."
