Martin Dobson makes it 1-0 with a flashing header low into the net after Leighton James raced down the left and sent over a perfect cross.
From a match report by Peter Higgs:
Burnley narrowed the gap between themselves and a place at Wembley to just three matches with a masterly show of First Division class that was too much for outplayed Oldham Athletic. Inspired by a memorable performance from Leighton James, Burnley did not merely win but turned on a fine display of fluent football to make this a highly entertaining cup-tie. It was James' last match before starting an automatic two-match ban and he certainly lived up to his pre-match boast that he would go out in style. Two dashing runs in the first six minutes from James produced two goals and he went on to score the third goal himself, laying on the fourth. The rest of the team played their part and the scoreline fairly reflected Burnley's superiority.
The first goal, after 4 minutes came when James beat centre-half Keith Hicks to the goal-line and crossed perfectly into the goalmouth for Dobson to sweep in with a fine header. Goal two, after 6 minutes, another excellent cross from James was met, at the near post with a superb flicked header from Fletcher. With the wind at their backs at the start of the second half Oldham tried desperately to get back into the game but Burnley took control again. In the 73rd minute James scored with a simple chance into an empty net from six yards after goalkeeper Ogden could only deflect a ball from a Hankin shot. The fourth goal came in the 87th minute after a pass from James to Dobson who ran through to draw Ogden from his goal and then slip the ball in. Oldham scored their goal in the 89th minute.
