From a report by Peter Higgs:
Burnley climbed back from the depths of FA Cup semi-final defeat to give a heart-warming performance at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, 3rd April 1974. In a tremendously exciting match, they finished with a well-deserved point - and should really have won. Their enthusiasm and drive showed how much they wanted to play. Their fluent moves were a lesson in football skill

Manchester United took the lead inside the first minute but Burnley then took over, pushed the ball around neatly and scored a well deserved equaliser in the 16th minute. From a corner by Collins, Fletcher sent Waldron clear and his cross left Geoff Nulty with ab open goal. His header hit the bar and Fletcher following up, beat two defenders to the ball to head past Stepney. The Clarets were so superior to United in method and skill at this stage that several times they came close to going ahead.

Burnley's dominance continued after the interval but United showed plenty of spirit and in ex-Claret Willie Morgan had a real dangerman. The home team went into a surprise lead in the 66th minute but within two minutes Burnley were level again. James took a penalty kick after goalkeeper Stepney brought down Collins. He scored with a low drive that went into the net via the left hand post. At this stage undercurrents of bad feeling began to come to the surface and Hankin, Fletcher and Morgan were booked for fouls. With nine minutes to go Burnley took the lead for the first time when they were given a second penalty after Holton grabbed Fletcher's shirt and pulled him to the ground. James coolly sent Stepney the wrong way to score from the spot. Burnley looked to have the match sewn up but United grabbed a surprise equaliser with just five minutes of the match remaining. From Burnley's viewpoint the match once more highlighted how difficult it is to replace Alan Stevenson in the team. As one of the country's best goalkeepers he has played a major role in Burnley's rise. Burnley's team performance was a good one with youngsters Billy Ingham and Ray Hankin, both fitting in well. Doug Collins controlled the midfield and Leighton James showed some flashes of his brilliant best.
