From a match report by Peter Higgs:
Burnley turned on a display of quality on Monday night, the 22nd April 1974, to get the final week of a memorable Turf Moor season off to a great start. As the fans happily sang "When the Saints Go Marching Out." the Clarets played some exhilarating football to push Southampton deeper into the relegation mire. It was an excellent match, full of goalmouth excitement and incident, in which the visitors although well beaten at the finish, played their part.
In a fine team performance there were several outstanding individual displays. And none greater than the performance of Paul Fletcher who had a marvellous match at centre forward. He scored the first goal, set up the other two and his strong running and power in the air gave Southampton problems all the match. Fletcher's goal on 37 minutes was a left foot volley from 10 yards. On 76 minutes, James drove a low first time shot into the far corner from 15 yards and Nulty scored the third goal on 85 minutes with a header which diverted the ball wide of Turner who could only help it into the corner.
