From a report by Don Smith:
If Burnley failed to explode the Collis King run scoring reputation at least they had the satisfaction of emphasising the present mediocre form of Nelson's amateur batting strength. They underlined a satisfactory afternoon's cricket with a five wickets victory, Barry Foster having seven victims. It was their first win since June 2nd. Also this success gave the side a sense of satisfactory achievement which should be an incentive for the future.
The great Collis again proved himself to be an outstanding performer with 65 runs out of a total of 113 and two wickets for 38 in three balls above 10 overs. Collis opened the innings and was ninth out with the score 99. He was dismissed by Gordon Allison who had him behind the wicket when he tried to lash the game's outstanding personality, Barry Foster, to leg. He played it late and got an edge and walked. Barry Foster had a remarkable match. The limelight bowler had been Chris Rawstron with the wickets of David Reeves and David Howarth in one over. Foster took his first with the last delivery of his seventh over. In the next seven overs he captured a further six wickets to finish with his best performance of the season - seven for 42. Nelson's stay at the wicket had lasted just over two hours.
Burnley met with early reverses. A smart catch close in on the leg side by Reeves disposed of Roland Harrison before a run was scored and Peter Brown went the same way at 22. A restrained innings by Michael McLeod steadied the situation for a while but King struck a second time - Plummer was taken by Ken Bythell in the slips. McLeod was bowled by John Greenwood -31 on the board, four wickets down. Neil Whalley and Trevor Pickup gradually brought the game round more in Burnley's favour and when Pickup was caught by Taylor John Edmondson arrived to play havoc with a surprised home attack. He hit the first delivery for four and in a hectic match winning partnership of 40 with Whalley he hit two sixes and equalled his previous highest of the season - 35 not out.
