Operation Clean-Up Under Way

Only four weeks after their first meeting members of Trinity Residents' Action Group, Burnley, are celebrating their first victory in a campaign to clean up the neighbourhood. They have persuaded a garage owner to clear land which, as an unofficial tip, has become one of the area's biggest eyesores. Mr Dennis Holmes, chairman of the action group said that one of the main objects of the group was to clean up their area and to make it one of the best in the town.

He said: "One of the first things we wanted to tackle was the Delph, an old quarry between Accrington Road and the railway line, which had been used for years as a tip. We found that part of it belonged to the nearby Station Garage and wrote to the owner, Mr Vic Kelly, a fortnight ago asking him to consider getting it cleaned up. We couldn't have had a better reaction. Three days later Mr Kelly had a bulldozer on the job to clear the rubbish and to level out the site. He also put some huge stone blocks across the entrance to prevent vehicles dumping any more stuff. He has done a tremendous job and we have written a letter to thank him."
