From a match report by Peter Higgs:
Two smartly taken goals by Burnley in the last 10 minutes of the match brought soccer injustice to Boothferry Park on Wednesday night, 11th September 1974. For eighty minutes the Second Division side had outplayed Burnley in every department. But they failed miserably in one vital aspect - finishing.
There seemed no way Burnley, out of form and out of luck, could win this match. But then a superb move with ten minutes left brought a surprise equaliser and it seemed that Burnley had the chance to make up for this below-par performance in a replay. Three minutes from the end, Billy Ingham lobbed in the winner and Hull, visibly shattered by the goal, were reminded what a cruel game football can be. Burnley deserved credit for a gritty, determined performance and for some ice-cool finishing. Even when everything was going against them the Clarets did not let their heads drop but just kept battling away to turn the match their way.
And when those chances came along, how well they took them! Burnley's first goal was a gem. It came in the 80th minute when they were trailing to the goal scored for Hull by Peter Fletcher in the 52nd minute. Billy Rodaway's measured pass put Peter Noble away down the right wing. The Burnley midfield man put over a perfect centre on the run from near the goal-line and there was James swooping in at the near post to send a firm header into the net. Then came the winner in the 87th minute. The Hull defence was caught badly out of position when Fletcher's pass put Ingham clear down the middle. As goalkeeper Wealands came out Ingham kept his head and headed the ball over the goalkeeper from about 20 yards. Full-back de Vries raced back but could not prevent the ball trickling into the net.
