Proving that girls are every bit as good as the men when it comes to football, Altham's v Thomson's.
It was the turn of the girls to show their skill on the football pitch when Altham's challenged Thomson's to a five-a-side match at the Thompson Sports Centre on Sunday 17th November 1974. The teams from Altham's Travel Services Ltd and Thomson Holidays, Manchester, played a good will game with Thomson's winning 4-1. Despite their defeat Altham's, captained by Brenda Hough, are not dismayed and plan to challenge the visitors to a return match after a few practice games.
Altham's general sales manager Mr Mike Cain, said: "All the girls work in the offices and we thought it would be a good way of introducing them to one another. Brenda Hough plays for Nelson ladies hockey team and two other girls in our team come from Burnley, Freda Roe and Cathy Hitchon. The girls played very well and looked as though they were enjoying themselves. The ladies match was followed by a men's game but we lost 3-5 to Thomson". After the games the teams buried their rivalry over a drink and snack, all well satisfied with the afternoon's sport.
