The result may say a draw but this was a moral victory for Burnley over a Leeds team desperate to avenge recent defeats at the hands of the Clarets. In a game of uncompromising physical challenge only the bravest survived. Burnley had enough men of courage to meet the challenge and in the end were well worth their point. Seven players went into the notebook of referee Peter Willis, four from Leeds and three from Burnley.
Burnley looked a bit hesitant during the first half and were caught out a few times by centres to the far post. In the 11th Minute Jordan scored for Leeds but it wasn't until the 31st minute that James levelled when he bravely beat Harvey and Gray to the ball to lash it high into the net. In the second half, Burnley conceded a sloppy goal in the 68th minute when Lorimer came through unchallenged to score with a fine header into the corner of the net. Burnley hung on desperately with Stevenson making a vital save with his left foot from McKenna and Noble heading out from under the crossbar. At the other end Harvey defied Hankin by blocking a close-range volley before Burnley finally got their reward five minutes from the end with a marvellously subtle goal from Leighton James. Harvey could only knock down Brennan's high cross and James, neatly controlling the ball as he shielded it from Yorth, sent a perfectly placed lob over the heads of Harvey and McQueen into the far corner.
