Burnley Express photographer Ron Rennell captures the story in pictures of how Doug Collins forced home Burnley's late winner against Carlisle -at the third attempt. 3. No stopping this one as Collins right-foots the ball in.
From a report by Peter Higgs:
The consistency that Burnley seek is still a long way off. Despite a spirited second-half rally this was a sketchy performance. And it might so easily have been two points tossed away, instead of two points won. Any team that comes back to win after being paralysed for the first 45 minutes deserves credit. But Burnley can thank their lucky stars that Carlisle did not score the goals which their early superiority merited. The man behind Burnley's fight-back was Leighton James currently enjoying a spell of his best form. He not only scored the vital equalising goal, but provided the inspiration to lift the whole team after they had played so badly for the first 45 minutes.
Alan Stevenson was Burnley's hero in the first 45 minutes. Four first half saves were of the highest class. The one goal that Burnley did concede came in the 16th minute when Martin, spotting Stevenson off his line, cleverly flighted the ball into the far corner of the net. Carlisle played some neat, incisive football in spite of the wind during the opening half. But they were aided by a lethargic display from Burnley. In the second half, James scored the equaliser in the 50th minute. McCartney, facing his own goal dallied over a clearance of a pass back to his goalkeeper, and James nipped in behind him and stabbed the ball high and wide of Ross into the net. Lifted by the goal Burnley found their form and it was on the cards that Burnley would get a winner. Two minutes from time Collins ran on to a pass from Ingham and after having one shot cleared off the line scored, with a right-foot shot from a narrow angle.
