House-proud residents still try to keep the area respectable but they are fighting a losing battle against dereliction.

From an article by Steve Entwistle:
An area of Burnley is being "strangled into dereliction," as many of its residents are afraid to spend money improving their property because of uncertainty surrounding the area's future. The once proud and prosperous Daneshouse area had been re-christened "Burnley's forgotten land" by many of the people who live there.

Rumours have been spreading that many of the properties are soon to be demolished as part of a slum clearance programme. Vandalism and burglaries are rife. Vermin breed in rubbish that has been dumped in derelict sites. Old people are afraid to leave their homes and some have reached such a stage of despair they have asked the council to move them to some other part of the town. In almost every street there is at least one derelict house, bricked or boarded up or just left to crumble away.

Borough Planning and Estates Office Mr Andrew Walker said there was no need for any uncertainty because the council had contacted householders whose homes were to be demolished as part of a slum clearance programme. He said: "There has been a draft planning brief which has been approved in principle but this is for future development of the area. It does not affect the whole of Daneshouse. Some houses which were previously refused grants have now been allowed grants or they are included in the clearance programme."
