Local youngster take the message of the poster to heart.
Local road safety experts have joined battle to cut accidents on what is rapidly becoming Burnley's black spot for pedestrians - Burnham Gate. Since the beginning of 1973 seven children and two adults have been knocked down and injured on the road - one of the children fatally - according to Burnley's Accident Prevention Officer, Derek Sanderson. He puts the blame on youngsters who refuse to use the footbridge to cross the road, and speeding motorists, using the road as a short cut to avoid Mitre junction traffic lights.
Now the police accident prevention branch and Lancashire County Council road safety organisers have begun a poster campaign to alert people to these dangers. Posters warning motorists to watch their speed and advising pedestrians to use the footbridge have been placed along the road. Mr Sanderson said "Having in mind the increasing dangers on Burnham Gate a school crossing patrol now operates at Blannel Street. Parents are advised to see that children who have to cross Burnham Gate to go to school, cross at the school crossing patrol. Drivers are advised to drive with extreme care, particularly near to the bus bays and at peak traffic times."
