Ingham Gregory with the competition secretary Dennis Hargreaves before the start of his match.
From an article by Don Smith:
The bowlers with the local associations, Ingham Gregory and Harry Burgoyne, were dismissed from the St Andrew's invitation handicap in second round matches on Wednesday, 2nd July 1975. The Lancashire Panel association player went out to John Bradburn (Turton) 41-19 and the District League expert lost to Fred Hulme (Stockport) by a similar margin.
Gregory was in difficulty from the start for his woods were considerably heavier than those of Bradburn, who used the green with tactical skill when he took the jack. The former Burnley player preferred corner to corner where his woods reached better whereas they were inclined to run away on the fiery green on the short lengths over the crown. At one stage Bradburn was 23-9 ahead and then when Gregory took him in the corners it looked as though Ingham was making a fighting revival. He won six ends in succession but lost the next eight, a vital period which placed Bradburn well on the way to victory.
Burnley Road club bowler Harry Burgoyne from Accrington had some excellent ends only to be beaten by the impressive and masterly accuracy of Hulme, who immediately went into the lead. On several occasions Burgoyne tried a strike but his opponent dominated the game, frequently beating a wood which looked a winner. Markers were Fred Musgrove and Brian Hargreaves. These were the last matches in the competition until tournament resumes on Saturday July 19th.
