Members of Burnley Alliance Silver Band brought a little cheer to Saturday shoppers when they gave a three-hour concert in the Market Square. The band brought a smile to the faces of many passers-by with their catchy and entertaining music, but there was also a smile on the band's face after the concert ended, for it had raised about £160. This will go towards a £1,000-plus bill for new uniforms and, comes on top of a £6,000 bill for new instruments for the fast-improving band.
Band secretary Mrs Margaret Taylor said: "We were very pleased with the response. The concert was well received, and crowds kept gathering and listening for a while before moving on. Perhaps if the day had been a little warmer it would have been much better. We would like to do this more often, if only we could get permission from the council. I am sure people would support us, and many have asked us why we do not play in the parks any more."
