HE's done it! Fearless barman Fred Scott. along with friend Gerry OMara. has added a little brightness to Burnley this Christmas and has managed
to raise £1000 for two charities in the process.
Helped by Burnley firemen Kevin Fylde and Philip Emmot, Fred. of Cog Lane. and electrician of Avon Court have fixed
fairy lights on the tree sprouting from the top of the 90ft Bank Parade chimney owned by J.G. Harrison Fireplaces. Every man has an ambition, and for years it has been. Friends wish to decorate the tree, which he sees every day while working behind the cocktail bar at the Kirby Hotel. That wish came true in the wind and the rain of Sunday morning. When fire helmeted. Fred and Jerry. Took to a special hydraulic platform. Usually reserved by the fire brigade for Major Blazers and completed the great ascent from the car park at Keithley Green Social Club. The event was supervised by. Area District officer. Jean Wightman, who said the charity climb was just one off and doubled as a training exercise for his men. It is a bit of work for us, he said. Also in the crowd was Fred's anxious sister, Mrs Marie Milner. Who said that her brother was the light of her life and added He has more guts than I have. I am very proud of him. The owner of the building. Mr Norman Nash congratulated Fred and Jerry on their effort and added, We are willing to help. For a Burnley charity on the chimney is very distinct feature. It is a very old building. I now would like to know about its history. After a nail biting 30 minutes the job was done and was followed by a big switch on. Which was celebrated with 2 bottles of champagne given by the Kia B Hotel. And after they colour had returned to Fred's cheeks, he admitted he had enjoyed the experience. The money will be split between Fernbank Children's Home and the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund. A huge Santa face donated by E.D.Wood Ltd which was too big to go on top of the tree was put up on the children's home yesterday. And there is no need for Fred to worry about taking the lights down, for they are\ to stay on the tree throughout the year as a reminder of the day of the Fearless Barman managed to socket to em.
