Wrong Way Up The New One Way

Rosegrove Railway Bridge.

This was the scene on the 70-year old Rosegrove railway bridge early yesterday morning when a motorist failed to see that the bridge was closed to normal traffic entering from the Accrington Road/Rossendale Road junction. Local bus services and emergency services are allowed through, but this motorist found himself in trouble when he was met by single-line lorry traffic. One-way traffic will be in operation on the bridge for a period of nine to 12 months while rebuilding work, and widening of a section of Liverpool Road is in progress.

Over 50 diversion signs have been put up by the local authority and the Automobile Association to guide traffic away from the work. A police official, in the Traffic Department, said yesterday, that on the whole the diversion scheme had operated smoothly so far. Apart from comprehensive diversionary measures, the traffic lights have been altered to show green arrows pointing left and right at the entrance to Liverpool Road from the junction of Accrington Road and Rossendale Road.
