An all-action 24 hours from the five record breakers - Alan Pollard, George Wilkie, Peter Myers, David Barton and Marco Rasic.
A team of ten-pin bowlers from Burnley's Granada Bowling Centre broke the world marathon bowling record at the weekend. Over a period of 24 hours, ending shortly after nine o'clock on Saturday night, the five players knocked down 69,670 pins, breaking the record by 1,560 pins. The record they were chasing of 68,110 was held by Southampton Bowl. A year ago a team from Burnley established a record of 79,000 pins in a 24 hour period but on this occasion stricter rules were observed. While fewer pins were demolished this time the bowlers finished their stints in excellent shape and indeed considered they could have gone on for another several hours.
During the marathon they smashed the house record for one game with a total of 947 pins between them and scored a total of 1,184 strikes (that is knocking down all 10 pins with one delivery). Monies raised by the marathon are being sent to the mayor of Burnley's Kidney Machine Fund. The mayor (Ald. J. E. Parkinson) started off the marathon on Friday night but fortunately the players did not follow his lead of completely missing all the pins.
