As work nears the stage when more shops will be available in Burnley's new shopping centre, some of those who have traded in Bridge Street for many years are settling in for another year or two in their present location. Although virtually closed to through traffic (and there are two large wooden gates across the road) Bridge Street is still open for about 50 yards from St James's Street giving access to the rear of the Palace cinema. Despite difficulties from the neighbouring building site, six shops are gallantly carrying on "business as usual". These comprise a sweet shop, a cafe, an ironmongers, a textile fabric shop, a tobacconist and a household and fancy goods shop. In some cases, attractive new shops have been made there by traders who have moved from premises recently demolished on St James's Street, Fleet Street and the other side of Bridge Street. Meantime work on the Market hall goes on briskly and with many of the hoardings which have been in place for about two years, now removed, shoppers are able to get a better impression of at least part of the future Burnley. Work on shopfitting for traders who have already taken shops should begin any time now and some are expected to be in business by Christmas.
