Their last church parade.... Members of the Borough police force as they marched to St Peter's Church yesterday. Later they were to hear tributes from civic leaders praising their loyal devotion to duty over the years
On the eve of the birth of the new Lancashire police force, in which Burnley becomes a divisional headquarters, members of the Burnley Borough force marched into history yesterday afternoon. They took part in a church parade for a service at St Peter's, and then marched past civic leaders at the Townhall. Today Burnley becomes the administrative and operational centre of the new F division of the amalgamated force. To mark the end of the local force, which came into existence in June 1887, representatives presented the town with a silver cigarette box and plaque yesterday afternoon. Superintendent Greenwood said that there is a certain sadness about a moment like this, we are in the midst of rapid changes and we share a common determination to make this new Force work. We are simply preparing for the future and at the same time being slightly nostalgic for the past. On parade were the cadets and members of the local Special Constabulary.
