The Folk boom came to Burnley on Thursday 4th November 1965, as Burnley's first folk club opened above Mullard's Social Club, Padiham Road. Topping the bill were the Taverners from Blackpool, but also making a big impression on the audience was Burnley boy Roger Westbrook. Mr. Ralph Smith, the organiser, was very pleased with the turnout, considering it was the first night. He hopes that by the end of the month the audience will have reached about 200, by then the club will have begun to pay its way.
The Taverners were a great hit, and Mr. Smith says that he hopes to have them back in the near future. Formed about 18 months ago they are now one of the most popular folk groups in the north-west and run their own folk club in Blackpool.
Local boy Roger Westbrook, was also a big hit, when he volunteered to perform during the interval; in fact he was so good that Mr. Smith has asked him to perform again. Roger who names Tom Paxton, Joan Baez and Bert Jansch as his favourites, became interested in folk music while at university and has sung in folk clubs at Manchester and Leeds.
