Princess Anne Visit 1977

One of the first people Princess Anne spoke to after the riding display was 22-year-old Simonstone rider David Suthren.
After presenting him and other riders with commemorative red, white and blue rosettes, the Princess asked him how long he had been horse riding. David, who is paralysed down the right side of his body, said he had been riding for 11 years and enjoyed his hobby very much.
"I felt very nervous but our conversation was something I will never forget" said David.
David featured in the one moment of drama during the displays when, after giving a faultless performance during the musical ride, his dappled grey mare Collen took fright at a sudden burst of clapping as the rosettes were presented. The horse shied and moved backwards but David, who works for the North-West Water Authority, remained in command and stayed in the saddle.
