Members of Burnley Athletic Club watch Margaret Sutcliffe (14) competing in the ladies' long jump event. She was the overall winner and also won the high jump.
For the first time in its history, Burnley Athletic Club has been host to other clubs throughout the north on a Mid Lancashire Track League day and they celebrated by winning. Running the full gamut of track, relay and field events at Barden sports ground, they beat teams from Lancaster, Morecambe, Southport, Preston and Rossendale. They won with a total of 77 points. Their nearest rivals were Lancaster and Morecambe who both had 58 points.
The club had another first. It was the first time they have ever won one of these events, held every month at different towns in the county. The chairman, Mr. David Fletcher, said "It was very encouraging. Our first victory ever on an event of this scale and we won quite comfortably. Perhaps our colours - claret and blue - had something to do with our success."
