A Burnley Girl Guide, Miss Elizabeth Lord, of 93 Abel Street, received the coveted Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award from the Mayoress of Burnley, Mrs. E. J. Willis, at Holy Trinity Church Hall on Tuesday, 8th September 1970.
Elizabeth who is 19, spent three and a half years working for the award, and worked for six months in an old folk's home as part of the scheme. She will go to Buckingham Palace to collect her certificate from Prince Philip. She said: " I enjoyed the time I spent working with handicapped children most of all. It gave me a wonderful opportunity to meet people." Elizabeth, a former pupil of Ivy Bank School, is hoping to go to teachers' training college this year.

Another girl at the presentation was Christine Mackenzie, who broke her leg last week in a cycling accident. She was disappointed in missing last weekend's Guide camp trip to Waddow Hall, near Clitheroe, but she and her friend, Valerie Nutter, were both pleased with themselves when they received the Queen's Guide award from the Mayoress.
A Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award was awarded to Miss. Coral Kirkbright, and bronze awards to Misses Shirley Higgins, Pat Rothwell and Olwyn Garner.

Present at the buffet reception for the girls was the County Commissioner for the Girl Guides movement, Mrs. P. Thompson.
